The three days were spent recovering and learning what the ship had available, but not how any of it worked. Building an inventory of technological miracles had taken all that time. Even the commodore had become embroiled in what the fabrication and repair facilities were capable of. She had spent all three days in two maintenance bays.

How a shipbuilder had become the commander of a fleet of warships, no one would ever know. A talent for one did not translate into a talent for the other.

Galen Stone quickly became Team Payne’s favorite crew member. He was willing to experiment and went through a great deal of the colored biomass to find combinations and formulas that replicated the best of Earth’s dishes. Since the biomass was recycled, the cook was more than happy to experiment, but he grew full quickly and needed tasting volunteers. Team Payne rolled through the dining facility on a schedule to fill the need.

On the second day, the major implemented mandatory physical training, an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Lev reconfigured a space for human-centric training like lifting weights. They ran up and down the main corridor while carts occasionally whipped by.

For a ship that size, they found they ran into each other more often than not. Rarely were they completely on their own, and thanks to Lev constantly being in their minds, no one was ever lost.

It was two full days before Davida left the captain’s chair. She took one step and collapsed from exhaustion and dehydration. She was put in the health center, where she remained under the observation of devices charged with improving her state of well-being.

They assembled on the bridge at Leviathan’s request.

“I’ve called you here today to discuss our next steps,” he said ominously.

“Tell me we’re ready to move,” Payne replied.

“We’re ready to move. I am fully recharged. We can fold space at any time, which will make an emergency getaway possible. Shall we see what the living planet of Parallax is up to?”

Payne looked at Admiral Wesson.

“This is an unlikely crew to be tasked with a reconnaissance mission of this magnitude, but we will rise to the challenge. Leviathan will see us there. What we do once in range will be up to us. I would like Team Payne to suit up and load into their skimmer. Be ready to deploy should a target of opportunity present itself. Leviathan will not take offensive action, but if we can, we will. What kind of potential reward would be worth that risk? I don’t know, but if I see it, we’ll take it. Our very presence here could change the tide of war. When your homeworld becomes vulnerable, it changes the dynamics of morale. Will it bring them to the negotiating table or make them act more rashly? This, too, I don’t know.”

“Then maybe we should study them before taking any action,” the commodore offered.
